PowerOn technician replacing the microwave control board on a KitchenAid microwave oven combo with F6E8 error code

Table of Contents

If your KitchenAid microwave oven combo shows the KitchenAid F6E8 error code, the microwave usually stops working while the oven below keeps running. That’s exactly what one of our customers lived with for a full year. Two different repair companies looked at it and told her the part was discontinued. She had accepted it and was using only the oven.

We weren’t even called for the combo unit. We were there to fix her trash compactor.

How We Found It

While our technician was working on the compactor, he noticed the F6E8 code on the microwave display. He asked the homeowner how long it had been showing. – About a year, she said, and two companies had already told her it couldn’t be fixed.

Our tech knew this code. He’d seen it before and knew the fix was available. After she agreed, we came back with the right parts and ran through a full diagnosis. The problem turned out to be a failed appliance manager control board (the microwave’s control board). We replaced it, tested every function, and the microwave was working again after a year of sitting dead.

That’s what we mean when we say –we work for tomorrow, not for today. We look past the call we’re on.

What the KitchenAid F6E8 Error Code Means

On KitchenAid microwave oven combination units, F6E8 points to a communication problem between the oven control and the microwave section. The oven’s control is trying to talk to the microwave’s appliance manager board and isn’t getting an answer. The oven still heats because it has its own controls, but the microwave goes silent.

Common Causes of the F6E8 Error

1. Blown 20-Amp Line Fuse

Inside the microwave section there’s a 20-amp line fuse. If it blows, the appliance manager board loses power completely. No power means no communication, so the code appears.

2. Door Switch or Latch Problems

The microwave door uses several microswitches. A misaligned switch, a failed switch, or a wire rubbing through its insulation against sheet metal can short out and cause communication faults.

3. Failed Appliance Manager or User Interface Board

A bad user interface (touchpad) board can cause the same code. The appliance manager control board runs the microwave. When it fails, it stops responding to the oven control.  This was the cause in our customer’s unit.

Troubleshooting Steps You Can Safely Try

Step 1: Reset the power. Turn off both circuit breakers for the unit. Wait 1 to 5 minutes, then turn them back on. This clears temporary glitches, and sometimes that’s all it takes.

Step 2: Check the microwave light. Open the microwave door and see if the interior light comes on. If it doesn’t, the microwave probably isn’t getting power. That usually means a blown 20-amp fuse or no 120V reaching the appliance manager board.

Step 3: Check the door. Make sure the microwave door closes fully and latches firmly. A door that doesn’t press the switches properly can cause problems.

If the code comes back after these steps, it’s time to call a technician. Do not open the microwave housing yourself. A microwave’s high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even after the unit is unplugged. The FDA’s guidance on microwave oven safety explains why repairs should be left to trained professionals.

Why “Discontinued” Isn’t Always the Final Answer

Sometimes KitchenAid parts are listed as discontinued under the original part number but have been replaced by an updated version. Some boards can also be sourced through specialty suppliers. A technician who knows the unit knows where to look. Before you replace an expensive built-in combo unit, get a second (or third) opinion from someone who works on KitchenAid regularly.

Replacing a built-in microwave oven combo often means new cabinetry work, electrical changes, and several thousand dollars. A control board repair costs a fraction of that.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does F6E8 mean on a KitchenAid microwave oven combo?

F6E8 means the oven control has lost communication with the microwave’s appliance manager board. The oven may still work, but the microwave stops responding.

Can I fix the KitchenAid F6E8 error code myself?

You can try a power reset at the breaker and check that the door latches fully. Anything beyond that involves high voltage inside the microwave and should be handled by a trained technician.

Is the KitchenAid microwave control board discontinued?

Some original part numbers are discontinued, but replacement or updated versions are often available. An experienced KitchenAid technician can usually find the right part.

Why does my KitchenAid oven work but the microwave doesn’t?

The oven and microwave run on separate control boards. When the microwave board fails or loses power, the oven keeps working while the microwave shows F6E8.

How long does a KitchenAid combo unit repair take?

Once the part is on hand, replacing the appliance manager board usually takes a single visit. We bring the required parts so the repair is done the same day.
