Short answer: if your dryer runs, tumbles, and even smells warm on some cycles but not others, the problem usually isn’t the heating element. It’s more likely a thermal safety part that’s cutting the circuit, or — less commonly, but exactly what we found on a recent Electrolux job in The Woodlands — a relay on the main control board failing intermittently.

The call

A customer in The Woodlands reached out about their Electrolux dryer randomly not heating. Not every cycle — just sometimes. That kind of inconsistency is its own clue. A dead heating element gives you cold air every single time. A dryer that heats sometimes and not others points somewhere else entirely.

Our tech started where most no-heat calls start:

  • Heating element — tested it directly. Good.
  • Thermostats and the thermal cutoff fuse — all functional, no open circuits.
  • Motor centrifugal switch — responding correctly.
  • Wire harness — checked continuity on both sides. Clean.

Every part that normally takes the blame for a no-heat dryer checked out fine. That’s usually where people either give up or start replacing parts on a guess, which gets expensive fast on a part-by-part basis.

Instead, our tech tapped on the heat loop relay on the main control board while the dryer was running. The heat kicked on. Tapped it again — heat stopped. That’s about as clear a diagnosis as you get: the relay was failing intermittently, making and breaking contact depending on vibration, temperature, or just bad luck. The fix was replacing the main control board, since the relay isn’t a standalone part on this model.

This is the kind of fault that a symptom checklist alone won’t catch. It takes someone willing to sit with an intermittent problem long enough to reproduce it.

Why a dryer stops heating — the full list

“Dryer not heating” covers a lot of different failures, and electric and gas dryers fail differently. Here’s the real list, split out by type.

Electric dryers

  • Heating element burned out — the most common cause, and the first thing most people (and most techs) check.
  • Thermal fuse tripped — a safety part that cuts power to the heater if the dryer overheats, usually from restricted airflow. Once tripped, it has to be replaced — it won’t reset itself.
  • Cycling thermostat failed — regulates temperature during the cycle. If it fails open, the heater never gets power.
  • Blown thermal cutoff — similar to the thermal fuse, a one-time safety device.
  • Bad control board relay — what we found in The Woodlands. The board tells the heater when to turn on; if the relay that carries that signal is failing, the dryer heats unpredictably or not at all.
  • Power supply issue — electric dryers run on 240V, but only need 120V to tumble. If one leg of the power feed is out (a bad breaker or a loose connection at the outlet), the drum will spin fine while the heat stays dead. This is one of the most overlooked causes.
  • Timer or start switch fault — less common, but can prevent the heat circuit from ever getting energized.

Gas dryers

  • Igniter failure — the most common cause on gas dryers. A weak or dead igniter can’t get hot enough to ignite the gas.
  • Faulty gas valve solenoids — these open the gas valve once the igniter is hot enough. If they don’t open, the igniter glows but no flame follows.
  • Flame sensor issue — if the sensor doesn’t detect a flame, it shuts the gas valve back off as a safety measure, even if ignition briefly happened.
  • Gas supply problem — a partially closed valve or supply issue upstream of the dryer itself.
  • Control board or ignition control failure — same idea as the electric side. If the board isn’t sending the right signal, nothing downstream fires correctly.

Things that affect both types

  • Worn motor centrifugal switch — this switch confirms the motor is actually spinning before it allows power to the heat circuit, as a safety interlock. When the contacts wear or get pitted, the dryer tumbles normally but the heat never engages, or only engages inconsistently. We see this on its own, separate from any control board or relay issue — it’s one of the more common no-heat causes we run into and an easy one to miss if you’re only testing the heating element and thermostats.
  • Clogged venting or lint buildup — this won’t stop heat production, but it can trip thermal safety devices repeatedly, which looks like a heating problem from the outside.
  • Door switch not engaging fully — some models won’t run the heat cycle if the door switch isn’t reading as fully closed, even if the drum spins.

Why “random” no-heat is the hardest kind to diagnose

A dryer that never heats points you toward one of a handful of parts. A dryer that heats intermittently means whatever’s failing is only failing under certain conditions — a specific vibration, a certain temperature, a connection that’s loose enough to work most of the time. That’s what makes relay and connection failures harder to catch than a straight-up dead component. It usually takes someone testing the dryer while it’s actually running, not just checking parts with it off.
