If your Thermador oven fan won’t stop after the appliance has completely cooled, the problem may be more than a normal cool-down cycle. During this Thermador double oven repair, the homeowner’s cooling fan would not shut off. At first, the symptom appeared similar to a faulty thermistor or temperature sensor. After detailed diagnostic testing, however, we confirmed that the thermistor was working correctly.

The actual problem was a relay on the main PCB, also called the main control board or relay board. The relay had become stuck in the closed position, causing the board to continue supplying power to the cooling fan even when the oven was no longer requesting it.

What Does the Cooling Fan Do in a Thermador Double Oven?

The cooling fan protects the oven’s electronic controls, wiring, surrounding cabinetry, and other heat-sensitive components. It moves air through designated passages around the oven while the appliance is operating and during its cool-down period.

It is important not to confuse the cooling fan with the convection fan.

  • Convection fan: Circulates heated air inside the oven cavity to improve cooking performance.
  • Cooling fan: Moves air around the appliance’s controls, wiring, and internal components to manage heat.

Because the cooling fan is temperature-controlled, it may continue running after baking, broiling, or self-cleaning. Its operating time depends on the model, cooking temperature, and amount of heat remaining inside the oven.

Hearing the fan after turning off the oven is therefore not automatically a reason for concern. If it continues for hours, starts while the oven is cold, or never shuts off, the appliance may require professional diagnosis.

Why a Faulty Thermistor Can Cause a Similar Symptom

The thermistor monitors temperature and reports that information to the oven’s electronic control system. Its electrical resistance changes with temperature, allowing the control board to determine whether the appliance is hot or cool.

If the thermistor sends an incorrect reading, the control board may believe the oven is still too hot. As a result, it may keep the cooling fan operating even though the appliance has already cooled.

For this reason, the thermistor is one of the first components that should be considered when diagnosing a cooling fan that will not stop. Considering a component and confirming that it has failed, however, are not the same thing.

In this repair, diagnostic testing showed that the thermistor was not responsible. Replacing it would not have solved the customer’s problem.

The Actual Failure: A Relay Stuck on the Main PCB

The main PCB manages several oven components using relays that act as electronically controlled switches.

When the oven determines that cooling is necessary, the control system activates the appropriate relay. The relay closes the electrical circuit and supplies power to the fan. Once the oven has cooled, the board should release the relay and stop sending power.

In this case, the cooling-fan relay remained stuck closed.

Even though the oven no longer needed cooling, the relay continued completing the circuit. The fan therefore ran nonstop. Turning off the oven controls could not release a relay that had physically or electrically failed.

Why Detailed Diagnostic Testing Was Necessary

A nonstop oven fan can have several possible causes:

  • Normal operation during the cool-down period
  • A thermistor that is out of range
  • A damaged wire or electrical connection
  • A stuck relay on the control board
  • A control-board communication problem
  • Incorrect control-board programming
  • An actual overheating or airflow problem

Because several failures can produce the same symptom, replacing the most commonly suspected part is not a reliable repair method.

We evaluated the oven’s response, tested the temperature-sensing circuit, and traced the fan-control operation. The results led us to the relay board instead of the thermistor.

This distinction was especially important because replacing a main PCB is a more involved and expensive repair. A technician should have evidence that the board is responsible before recommending its replacement.

Replacing the Thermador Main PCB and Relay Board

Replacing the main board in a built-in double oven involves more than opening a small access panel.

The oven must first be safely moved out of its cabinet far enough to reach the control area. Built-in double ovens are extremely heavy, and the surrounding cabinetry, flooring, and appliance finish must be protected throughout the process.

After gaining access, we disconnected the wiring from the existing main PCB. We identified each connector and transferred it correctly to the replacement board. An incorrect connection could prevent the appliance from operating or damage the new component.

We then installed the replacement board and carefully inspected every connection before restoring power.

The repair was not complete yet, however. The new control board still needed to be programmed for the oven’s specific configuration.

Why the Replacement Control Board Needed Programming

Electronic oven controls are not always plug-and-play components. One control-board design may support multiple models and configurations, including single ovens, double ovens, and appliances with different features.

After installation, a replacement board may require model-specific programming so it can communicate correctly with the rest of the appliance.

Programming may affect:

  • Single-oven or double-oven configuration
  • Temperature control
  • Cooling-fan operation
  • Heating functions
  • Communication between electronic controls
  • Model-specific features

After programming the new board, we tested the Thermador double oven through its operating functions. The cooling fan responded normally and no longer remained on indefinitely.

We then carefully reinstalled the oven in the cabinet.

  • The fan restarts immediately after power is restored.
  • The oven controls are off, but the fan never stops.
  • The oven displays an error code.

  • The cabinet or control area becomes excessively hot.
  • You notice an electrical or burning smell.

Can You Reset a Thermador Oven With a Nonstop Fan?

Turning off the circuit breaker will temporarily stop the cooling fan because it removes power from the appliance. However, a reset cannot repair a relay that has become physically stuck.

Once power is restored, the fan may begin running again. If your Thermador oven fan won’t stop after a reset, the appliance needs proper diagnostic testing.

A single power reset may clear a temporary electronic fault. Repeatedly resetting the breaker, however, is not a substitute for diagnosing the problem.

Safety warning: Homeowners should not remove oven panels or test high-voltage components themselves. Built-in electric ovens operate on dangerous voltage even when the visible controls appear to be off.
